If your computer turns on but no display shows up, the fans spin, the lights come on, but the screen stays black or says no signal, do not assume the whole thing is dead. Nine times out of ten this is not the expensive problem it looks like. I’m Chris, I run Circuit Care here in Miami, and a black screen on a machine that clearly has power is one of the more common calls I get. A lot of the time it comes down to the monitor, a cable, or a part that worked itself loose, and you can check those for free in a few minutes. Here is how to work through it, in order, before you pay anyone.

First, is it powered on or actually dead?

There is a real difference between a computer that is completely dead and one that powers on but shows nothing. If you press the power button and get nothing at all, no fans, no lights, no sound, that is a power problem, and my guide on why a computer won’t turn on walks through that case. This post is for the other situation. You hit the button, you hear fans, you see a light on the case or the keyboard, maybe you even hear the normal startup sounds, but the screen never lights up. That tells us the computer has power. The job now is to find out why the picture is not getting to the screen.

Start with the monitor and the cable

This is the part most people skip, and it is where the fix usually hides. Before you open anything or buy anything, check the screen side of the setup.

First, make sure the monitor itself is on and getting power. It sounds obvious, but a monitor on the wrong setting looks identical to a broken computer.

Next, check the input source. Monitors have a little menu, usually a button on the side or the bottom, that picks which port the monitor is listening to. If your cable is in HDMI 1 but the monitor is set to HDMI 2 or DisplayPort, you get a black screen or a no signal message with nothing actually wrong.

Then deal with the cable. Unplug it at both ends and push it back in firmly. If you have a spare cable, swap it in, because a bad cable is one of the most common causes and one of the cheapest to rule out. If your computer has more than one video port, move the cable to a different one so a single dead port does not fool you into thinking the whole machine is gone.

The desktop trick almost everyone misses

If you have a desktop with a graphics card, this one is worth calling out on its own because I see it constantly. A graphics card plugs into the bottom of the case and has its own video ports. The motherboard has video ports too, up near the USB and network jacks. When a graphics card is installed, those motherboard ports usually go dead. So if your monitor is plugged in up top, you get a black screen even though everything is working fine. Move the cable to the ports on the card, lower down on the back of the case. That is often the entire fix, and it costs nothing.

Reset the hardware

If the monitor and cable check out, the next step is to clear any leftover power and, if you are comfortable, reseat the parts inside.

Start with a power drain. Shut the computer down, unplug a desktop from the wall or unplug a laptop’s charger, then hold the power button for about 30 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on. This empties out residual power that can leave a machine hung before it ever draws a picture.

On a laptop, test with an external monitor. Plug in a second screen or a TV over HDMI and turn the brightness up with the Fn keys. If that external screen shows your desktop, the laptop is running fine and the built in screen, its cable, or the backlight is the issue. I want to be straight with you here. On a desktop, if you are okay opening the case, the part to check is the memory. Power off, unplug, press the clips to pop the RAM sticks out, and firmly click them back in until they lock. A stick that vibrated loose, which happens more than you would think after a computer gets moved, will give you a black screen with the fans still running. If opening it up is not for you, that is completely fine, and it is a good point to bring it in.

The Miami angle most guides skip

Most black screen guides read like everyone lives in a quiet office with clean, steady power. Down here we deal with two things those guides never mention.

The first is our storm season. Summer afternoon storms, and the flickers and brownouts that ride along with them, are hard on the exact parts that drive your display, the power supply and the graphics card. A power supply that took a hit can still spin the fans but no longer feed enough clean power to the card, and the result is a computer that turns on to a black screen. If a bad storm rolled through right before this started, that is a real clue, and a surge protector is cheap insurance. I go deeper on that in my power surge and storm season guide.

The second is simple, and it is the honest reason a local shop helps with this one. The fastest way to solve a no display problem is to swap in known good parts, a spare monitor, a spare cable, a working stick of RAM, a test graphics card, and see what brings the picture back. That is hard to do at home when you only own the one computer. On the bench I can isolate it in minutes instead of you buying parts one at a time and hoping the next one is the answer.

When it is not a quick fix

If you have worked through all of this and the screen is still black, the cause is usually one of a few parts, the graphics card, the power supply, the memory, or on a laptop the screen or its cable. On a desktop, most of those are parts I can test and swap. I want to set honest expectations though. Circuit Care does not do board level soldering, so if the failure is a chip soldered onto a laptop motherboard, that is not something I fix, and I will tell you that at the diagnosis instead of having you pay for a dead end. And as I mentioned, a cracked laptop screen is a referral, not something I replace.
