Quick fix
Computer powers on but the screen stays black?
The fans and lights run, but you get nothing on the display.
1
Wake the screen
Tap a key, move the mouse, and bump the brightness up in case the display just went dark.
2
Confirm power
Look for fans spinning or lights on, since a fully dead PC is a power problem and not the screen.
3
Reseat the cable
On a desktop, unplug and replug the monitor cable on both ends and use the graphics card ports, not the ones on the motherboard.
4
Drain the power
Unplug the power and hold the button down for 30 seconds, then plug back in and start it up again.
5
Test another screen
Hook up a different monitor or a TV with another cable to see if the screen or the PC is the problem.
!
Heads up
Power down and unplug a desktop before you touch anything inside, and never yank a cable while it is running. If you see lights but hear repeated beeps, write down the pattern, since that points to a hardware fault.
Still a black screen after all that? Bring it to the Kendall shop and I will track down whether it is the screen, the cable, or something inside.
